This bill, known as the "washing machine microfiber filtration act," mandates that starting January 1, 2030, all new washing machines sold in the state must include a "microfiber filtration system," which is defined as a built-in or packaged filter capable of removing at least ninety percent of fibers and microfibers that are 100 micrometers or larger from the wash water across all cycles. Manufacturers will be required to provide a certificate of compliance for these machines, and both residential and commercial washing machines sold after this date must display a conspicuous sticker informing consumers about the filtration system and providing instructions for its maintenance. The Department of Environmental Conservation is empowered to create necessary regulations for implementation, and violations can result in civil penalties of up to $500 for a first offense and $1,000 for subsequent offenses.
