Bill Summary

This bill relates to budget adjustments by school districts affected by a natural disaster. Currently, a school district is eligible for a budget adjustment in an amount equal to the difference between the regular program district cost for the budget year and 101 percent of the regular program district cost for the base year. The bill provides for an additional year of budget adjustment if, during the base year or the budget year preceding the base year, a natural disaster impacts the school district for which a major disaster has been declared to exist by the president of the United States or for which the governor has proclaimed a state of disaster emergency. The amount of such additional year of budget adjustment shall be equal to the amount of the school district’s budget adjustment for the base year.

AI Summary

This bill modifies existing law to provide additional budget flexibility for school districts that have been impacted by a major natural disaster. Currently, school districts are eligible for a budget adjustment that allows them to increase their budget by up to 1% compared to the previous year. The new bill adds a provision that if a school district experiences a natural disaster during either the current or preceding budget year, and that disaster has been officially declared by the President of the United States or the state governor, the district can receive an additional budget adjustment equal to the amount of their previous year's budget adjustment. This means affected school districts will have extra financial support to help them recover and maintain educational services after experiencing significant damage or disruption from a natural disaster such as a hurricane, flood, or severe storm. The bill aims to provide fiscal flexibility and support for school districts facing extraordinary challenges caused by unpredictable and potentially devastating natural events.
