This bill, known as the "school security guard training enhancement act," mandates that any security guard employed or contracted by a school in New York State must complete specialized training tailored to a school environment as part of their annual in-service training. This school-specific training will cover topics such as the role and responsibilities of school security guards, relevant laws and liabilities, security awareness in educational settings, conflict resolution, emergency preparedness, understanding student behavior and cultural awareness, considerations for students with disabilities, restorative practices, crisis prevention, and the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). This curriculum will be developed and enforced by the Department of State, in consultation with other state agencies like the Department of Education and the Division of Homeland Security, ensuring it is standardized and approved statewide. The bill also amends the Executive Law to include school security guards in the consultation and cooperation of departments and agencies concerned with training.
