This bill requires the Commissioner of Education, in consultation with the Commissioner of Health, to conduct a comprehensive study and issue a report on the implementation of a 2012 law that authorized podiatrists to perform standard and advanced ankle surgeries. The study must provide detailed information about the privileges granted to podiatrists, including the number of practitioners who have applied for and obtained standard and advanced ankle surgery privileges. The report must also examine the use of limited ankle surgery permits, the settings where podiatrists have obtained training and performed surgeries, and the number of podiatric schools and colleges that have established programs to help candidates qualify for these surgical privileges. Additionally, the report must analyze the quality and safety of these surgeries by county, tracking the number and types of procedures performed from 2017 to 2024, reporting adverse events, tracking complaints filed against podiatrists with surgical privileges, and detailing disciplinary actions taken. The Commissioner must submit this report to state leadership by September 1, 2025, and then biennially, with the report also to be posted on the Department of Education's website. The bill aims to provide transparency and insight into the implementation and impact of expanded surgical privileges for podiatrists.
