This bill expands health insurance coverage for asthma treatment by requiring policies to include comprehensive asthma-related services and equipment. Specifically, insurance policies must now cover rescue inhalers, nebulizers, spacers, valved holding chambers, masks, and other devices used to help administer asthma medication, with additional equipment to be determined by the Department of Health. The bill also mandates coverage for asthma self-management education for patients and parents, which can be provided by physicians, licensed healthcare providers, or certified asthma nurse educators. The education will cover proper use of medical devices, environmental triggers, and asthma management techniques, and can include office visits, group sessions, and home visits when medically necessary. These education services will be limited to instances such as initial diagnosis, significant changes in symptoms, or when reeducation is needed. The coverage will be available for all ages, with additional school-related equipment for children under 19, and may be subject to standard policy deductibles and coinsurance. The bill will take effect on the first day of January following its passage and will apply to all new, renewed, or modified insurance policies from that date forward.
