This bill modifies existing law to authorize Chippewa Bands to establish their own big game hunting seasons within the 1854 Treaty Area when the state commissioner of natural resources does not establish an official season. The bill amends Minnesota Statutes to allow these bands to independently set hunting seasons for their tribal members, specifically when the state has not done so. Additionally, the bill appropriates $3 million in each of fiscal years 2026 and 2027 from the general fund to the commissioner of natural resources for proportional payments to Tribes involved in the 1854 Treaty. The commissioner is also required to work with the signatory Tribes to update and amend the existing agreement. The bill makes a minor technical change to the existing law by adding the phrase "as amended" to the Memorandum of Agreement reference, and establishes a new provision that gives Chippewa Bands more autonomy in managing hunting seasons within their treaty-established territories.
