This bill directs the University of North Carolina School of Medicine's Area Health Education Centers (NC AHEC) to compile comprehensive, evidence-based information about Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), a rare but serious condition where people with epilepsy die unexpectedly. NC AHEC is required to collaborate with multiple medical and healthcare professional organizations, including the NC Medical Board, NC Department of Health and Human Services, and various medical societies and boards, to gather and create standardized informational resources about SUDEP. These resources must include current information on risk factors, conditions related to SUDEP, and contact information for nonprofit support organizations. NC AHEC will make this information publicly available on their website and must provide a completed summary or booklet to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services by September 1, 2025. Named the "Joel H. Crisp SUDEP Awareness Law", the bill aims to improve healthcare practitioners' awareness and understanding of SUDEP, potentially helping to prevent these tragic deaths by increasing knowledge and recognition of risk factors. The bill becomes effective immediately upon becoming law.
