This bill expands the definition of "agricultural tourism" in New York state law to include a broader range of farm-based activities that can attract and educate the public. Specifically, the bill adds several new activities to the existing definition, such as producing and processing beverages in on-farm facilities like breweries, wineries, cideries, meaderies, and distilleries; processing fiber from animals like sheep and alpacas; and creating processed food products including ice cream, jams, and baked goods. These activities must still primarily promote the sale, marketing, production, harvesting, or use of farm products, and aim to enhance public understanding of farming and farm life. The expanded definition allows farmers more opportunities to engage visitors, diversify their income streams, and provide educational experiences about agricultural practices. The bill will take effect 120 days after becoming law, giving farms time to prepare and adapt to the new, more inclusive definition of agricultural tourism.
