This bill establishes an Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Leadership Institute within the State University of New York (SUNY) system to support and develop AANHPI leaders in higher education. The institute will focus on identifying and recruiting potential leaders, providing professional development, training search committees, and offering individualized support services. The chancellor of SUNY will appoint an executive director and create an eight-member advisory council to guide the institute, with members serving three-year terms. The institute will evaluate potential programs based on cost-effectiveness, long-term training potential, participant experience, and current employment data within the SUNY system. The executive director will be required to submit an annual report to the governor, assembly speaker, and senate majority leader detailing the institute's activities. Members of the institute and advisory council will serve without compensation, with the broader goal of increasing representation and supporting AANHPI professionals in leadership roles within SUNY campuses. The bill is set to take effect on the first of April following its passage into law.
