This bill directs the division of criminal justice services to establish a comprehensive, statewide public database that will track misconduct among law enforcement officers across all local police departments, county sheriff's offices, state police, and other agencies employing peace officers. The database will specifically compile names of police officers who have been terminated due to various types of serious misconduct, including but not limited to domestic violence, sexual violence, assault, harassment, criminal offenses against minors, excessive use of force, civil rights violations, perjury, falsifying police reports, evidence tampering, and deadly physical assault. Each agency's chief, sheriff, superintendent, or head will be required to report all relevant information to the division in a manner prescribed by their regulations. By creating this centralized database, the bill aims to increase transparency and accountability in law enforcement by providing a public record of officers who have been terminated for serious misconduct, which could help prevent problematic officers from being rehired in other jurisdictions. The bill will take effect 90 days after becoming law, with immediate authorization for developing necessary implementing regulations.
