This bill requires the state education department, in collaboration with the public health department, to develop comprehensive informational materials about type 1 diabetes specifically targeted to parents and guardians of school-aged children. Starting January 1, 2026, school districts and charter schools must provide these materials in writing when a student first enrolls in elementary school and again when entering 6th grade. The informational materials must cover key aspects of type 1 diabetes, including a description of the disease, risk factors and warning signs, recommendations for screening, and guidance on the different stages of the disease. The materials will explain the significance of type 1 diabetes stages (1, 2, and 3) and provide recommendations for parents, such as consulting a primary care provider if warning signs are observed and developing an appropriate treatment plan if diagnosed, potentially involving a specialist like an endocrinologist. The materials will be periodically updated and made available on the department's website for easy access by school districts and educational institutions.
