This bill mandates the creation and distribution of informational materials about type 1 diabetes for parents and guardians of students. The department, working with the department of public health, will develop these materials, which will be periodically updated and made available online to school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools. Starting January 1, 2027, schools must provide these materials to parents or guardians when a student first enrolls in elementary school and again when they enter grade 6. The information will cover what type 1 diabetes is, its risk factors and warning signs, and recommend consulting a primary care provider if warning signs appear. It will also explain the screening process, the significance of different stages of the disease (stages 1, 2, and 3), and the implications of diagnosis, advising parents to work with healthcare providers, including specialists like endocrinologists, to create a treatment plan.
