Bill Summary
AN ACT relating to opioid overdose training for peace officers.
AI Summary
This bill requires the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement to establish a mandatory training program for peace officers focused on opioid overdoses. Specifically, the training will require officers to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose and how to administer different types of opioid antagonists (medications that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose), including both injectable and nasal forms. The bill mandates that this training become part of both the initial minimum curriculum requirements for new officers and the ongoing continuing education programs for existing officers. The new training requirements will take effect for officers who begin their training on or after January 1, 2026, and will apply to continuing education training units starting from the Act's effective date of September 1, 2025. The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement is required to adopt rules to implement these changes as soon as practicable after the Act becomes effective.
