AI Summary
This bill requires two major constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina - North Carolina State University and UNC Chapel Hill - to regularly compete against each other in specific sports (football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, and softball) starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. The bill mandates that for low-game count sports (football and basketball), the institutions must play at least one home or away game against each other each academic year, while for high-game count sports (baseball and softball), they must play a series of at least three home or away games. The legislation aims to restore traditional athletic rivalries that have been disrupted by recent conference realignments, with the broader goal of preserving school spirit, community engagement, and regional pride. By ensuring these inter-institutional competitions, the bill seeks to generate revenue, boost tourism, and maintain the historical significance of collegiate athletics within North Carolina.
