This bill allows Marie Glarakis, a former Suffolk County police officer who is already receiving disability retirement benefits from the New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System (NYSLPFRS), to change her retirement beneficiary and switch her retirement option. Currently, she has a "Joint allowance" which means her pension continues to a beneficiary after her death, and she had previously named James Scandariato as that beneficiary. This bill permits her to change to a "Single life allowance" (Option 0), which means her pension payments will stop upon her death, and she will no longer have a designated beneficiary. To make this change, she must submit a request to the state comptroller within six months of the bill's effective date, and her benefit will be recalculated and paid from that date forward. This change will result in an immediate past service cost of $47,900 for employers participating in NYSLPFRS.
