This bill allows Marie Glarakis, a former Suffolk County police officer who is already receiving disability retirement benefits due to a performance of duty injury from the New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System (NYSLPFRS), to change her retirement beneficiary and switch her retirement option. Currently, she has a "Joint allowance" which means her pension would continue to a designated beneficiary after her death, and she had previously named James Scandariato as that beneficiary. This bill permits her to change to a "Single life allowance" (Option 0), which means her pension payments would stop upon her death, and she can also change her beneficiary. To make these changes, she must submit a request to the state comptroller within six months of the bill's effective date, and her new benefit amount will be recalculated and paid from that date. The bill also notes a one-time cost of $47,900 to the NYSLPFRS, shared by all participating employers, to cover the change in her retirement benefit.
