This bill amends the social services law to expand the definition of "employee" eligible for health care and mental hygiene worker bonuses by adding a new category of recipients. Specifically, the bill includes any parent or parent of a minor who cares for a minor child with an intellectual or developmental disability within the existing bonus program. The original definition already covered a wide range of health care and mental hygiene workers, including physicians, nurses, therapists, technicians, aides, and support staff who work in various settings and receive an annual base salary of $125,000 or less. The new provision acknowledges the significant caregiving role of parents supporting children with intellectual or developmental disabilities by making them eligible for the same bonuses as other health care and mental hygiene workers. The bill is retroactive, taking effect immediately and applying from April 9, 2022. This change recognizes the important and challenging work of parents caring for children with special needs and provides them with financial recognition similar to professional healthcare workers.
