Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the public health law, in relation to training for prescribers of certain pain medications
AI Summary
This bill updates training requirements for healthcare prescribers of certain pain medications by modifying existing public health law. Specifically, the bill expands the standards for course work and training to include updated language around addiction services, social determinants of health, and co-occurring disorders. For prescribers renewing their registration after July 1, 2026, the training must now include techniques to reduce overdose risks and medication-related harms, as well as information about becoming a buprenorphine prescriber (a medication used to treat opioid addiction). The bill requires the commissioner of health, in consultation with the department of education and the office of addiction services and supports, to establish and periodically update these training standards, which will be published on the department's website. The changes aim to improve patient-centered care and provide more comprehensive education for healthcare professionals prescribing controlled substances. The bill will take effect 120 days after becoming law, with immediate authorization for developing necessary regulations.
