This bill extends the authority of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to manage bluefish (scientifically known as Pomatomus saltatrix) from December 31, 2025, to December 31, 2028. The bill allows the DEC to continue establishing regulations for bluefish management, which includes setting size limits, catch and possession limits, defining open and closed seasons and areas, restricting fishing methods, requiring permits, mandating record-keeping, controlling fishing effort and gear, and regulating the transportation, possession, and sale of bluefish. These regulations must be consistent with the requirements of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the Federal Fishery Conservation and Management Act. The change is technical in nature, simply extending the existing management authority for an additional three years to ensure continued oversight of bluefish populations and fishing practices in New York State waters.
