This bill extends the authority of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to manage bluefish (a marine fish species scientifically known as Pomatomus saltatrix) from December 31, 2025, to December 31, 2028. Specifically, the bill amends an existing section of environmental conservation law to update the date by which the DEC can establish regulations for bluefish management. These regulations can include size limits, catch and possession limits, seasonal restrictions, area closures, fishing gear requirements, permit regulations, and rules about transportation, possession, and sale of bluefish. The bill requires that any regulations created by the DEC must be consistent with the fishery management plans of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the Federal Fishery Conservation and Management Act. The legislation is a routine administrative extension that allows the DEC to continue its established management practices for bluefish for an additional three years.
