Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the public officers law, in relation to requiring certain individuals to file financial disclosure forms

AI Summary

This bill amends the public officers law to expand the requirements for financial disclosure forms, now mandating that not only statewide elected officials, state officers, employees, legislators, legislative employees, and political party chairs must file annual financial disclosure statements, but also candidates for statewide elected office or legislative positions and members of regional economic development councils (including volunteers). The bill specifies that legislators, legislative candidates, and legislative employees will file their statements with the legislative ethics commission by May 15th for the preceding calendar year, which will then be forwarded to the commission on ethics and lobbying in government by June 30th. All other individuals required to file will submit their statements directly to the commission on ethics and lobbying in government. The expanded requirements aim to increase transparency and accountability for a broader range of public-facing individuals by requiring them to disclose financial information annually. The bill will take effect on the first of June following its enactment.
