This bill establishes a public awareness campaign to combat elder financial exploitation, which is the illegal use of an older adult's money or property. The campaign, to be developed and conducted by the director in consultation with the superintendent of the department of financial services, will educate older adults and their caregivers or fiduciaries on how to prevent and identify financial exploitation. It will utilize various media, including public forums, social media, and advertising, and will make informational materials available on the office's website and distribute them to area agencies on aging. These materials will cover topics such as the prevalence of financial exploitation in New York, risk factors, common scams and their indicators, signs that an older adult may be a victim, reporting methods, protective strategies, and resources for victims, including the elder abuse enhanced multidisciplinary team program.
