The resolution highlights that DC Black Pride was the world's first Black Pride festival, originating from the tradition of the "Children's Hour" at the Club House, a community gathering space for African American LGBTQIA+ individuals. Founded by Wilmore Cook, Theodore Kirkland, and Ernest Hopkins, the event aimed to raise awareness, support HIV/AIDS organizations, and create a space for community celebration. The resolution notes that DC Black Pride has grown to become a significant international event, inspiring over 50 similar celebrations worldwide and serving as the birthplace of the Center for Black Equity (formerly the International Federation of Black Prides). The 2025 event, marking its 34th anniversary, will take place from May 23-26 with the theme "BLACK PRIDE IS FREEDOM" and is expected to draw over 500,000 people from around the globe. By passing this resolution, the Council of the District of Columbia officially recognizes and honors the contributions of DC Black Pride to the Black LGBTQIA+ community and its ongoing efforts to promote awareness, unity, and resistance against discrimination.
