This bill amends the New York education law to allow pharmacists to administer reversible progestin-only contraceptive injections under specific conditions. Pharmacists must first receive comprehensive training approved by the commissioners of education and health, which covers screening, informed consent, administration techniques, medical precautions, record-keeping, and emergency response. To administer these contraceptive injections, pharmacists must: (1) have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed prescriber, (2) notify the prescriber within five days of administration through electronic medical records or other communication methods, (3) only begin administration after the patient has received an initial injection and been deemed eligible for maintenance treatment, (4) provide a private area for injection, and (5) be subject to potential prescription reassessment by the prescriber. The bill also authorizes pharmacists to administer emergency medications like anaphylaxis treatment related to the injection. The new provisions will take effect 180 days after becoming law, allowing time for regulatory preparation and implementation.
