This bill amends Ohio state law to allow the surviving spouse of a Purple Heart recipient to retain or obtain a Purple Heart specialty license plate under certain conditions. Currently, when a Purple Heart recipient dies, their special license plates must be replaced with standard plates. The new law changes this by permitting the spouse (who has not remarried) to keep the existing Purple Heart license plates or apply for new ones. Unlike the previous law, the spouse will now be required to pay standard registration taxes and fees to maintain the special plates. The bill also clarifies that it is illegal for anyone who is not a Purple Heart recipient or their eligible spouse to falsely represent themselves to obtain these specialty license plates. The legislation aims to provide continued recognition and honor to the families of military service members who have been wounded or killed in combat, as represented by the Purple Heart award.
