This bill, known as "The Memphis Safe Task Force Accountability Act," requires the district attorney general in any judicial district where the Memphis Safe Task Force or a federal task force to combat violent crime is active to report specific actions taken regarding serious offenses that originated from these task forces. A "serious offense" is defined as a range of violent crimes, firearm felonies, drug felonies, sexual offenses, theft felonies, organized retail crime, child sexual exploitation, RICO Act violations, or criminal gang offenses. The district attorney general must submit a monthly compilation of reports to various state and federal officials, including the Attorney General and Reporter, legislative leaders, the District Attorneys General Conference, and the relevant U.S. Attorney, whenever they enter into a plea agreement, lower a charged offense, or dismiss or decline to prosecute such an offense. This reporting requirement applies to charges filed on or before June 30, 2028, and continues for actions related to charges filed by that date. A "federal task force to combat violent crime" is described as an ongoing Department of Justice mission using federal, state, and local law enforcement to combat crime, while the "Memphis Safe Task Force" is defined as a federal task force focused on ending violent crime in Memphis through aggressive policing, prosecution, and investigations, coordinating with state and local officials.
