This bill permits certain use of virtual or remote instruction by schools during inclement weather to meet the minimum 180-day school year requirement. Under the bill, if the schools of a school district close due to inclement weather, the commissioner is to permit the district to apply to the 180-day school year requirement, a day of virtual or remote instruction for four or more hours in that same day. The bill permits a school district to apply the bill's provisions to no more than three days per school year. The bill directs the board of education of each school district and the board of trustees of each charter school or renaissance school project to develop and adopt a policy for the use of virtual or remote instruction on days in which schools are closed due to inclement weather in accordance with the bill's provisions.

AI Summary

This bill allows school districts in New Jersey to use virtual or remote instruction during inclement weather days to count towards the required 180-day school year. Under the new provisions, if schools close due to bad weather, the commissioner of education will permit the district to apply a virtual or remote instruction day (lasting at least four hours) to meet the 180-day requirement. School districts are limited to using this provision for no more than three days per school year. The bill also requires each school district, charter school, and renaissance school project to develop and adopt a specific policy governing the use of virtual or remote instruction on weather-related closure days. This legislation provides flexibility for schools to maintain instructional time during unexpected weather events without requiring physical school attendance, while establishing clear guidelines to ensure educational continuity and quality. The bill takes effect on the first day of the fourth month following its enactment.
