Bill Summary

This bill requires a state or municipal weights and measures inspector or sealer, when inspecting a gas pump, to place a sticker on the pump that shows the federal and state gas tax rates per gallon of gas. The bill requires the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection to develop a sticker for this purpose and to distribute stickers to all state and municipal weights and measures inspectors and sealers who inspect gas pumps. DATCP is also required to update and redistribute the stickers when the federal or state gas tax rate changes. For further information see the state and local fiscal estimate, which will be printed as an appendix to this bill.

AI Summary

This bill requires the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) to create and distribute stickers for gas pumps that clearly display the current federal and state motor vehicle fuel tax rates in cents per gallon, separately for gasoline and diesel fuel. These stickers must be at least 3.5 inches on each side and will be placed on gas pumps by state and municipal inspectors during routine pump inspections. The stickers must be positioned prominently and clearly on the face of the pump so consumers can easily see the tax information. Whenever federal or state motor vehicle fuel tax rates change, DATCP must produce and distribute new stickers to all inspectors. The bill specifically notes that gas station owners and operators are not legally responsible for affixing or maintaining these tax rate stickers. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2026, giving state agencies time to prepare for implementation.
