This bill seeks to recognize and honor the service of members of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps who served during World War II (specifically between July 1, 1943, and December 31, 1948) by granting them certain benefits and recognition. The Secretary of Defense is required to issue an honorable discharge to these individuals within one year of the bill's enactment, based on the nature and duration of their service. While these individuals will be honored as veterans, they will not be entitled to most Veterans Affairs benefits except for eligibility for headstones, markers, and related benefits under specific chapters of veterans' laws. The Secretary of Defense is also authorized to create a service medal, memorial plaque, or other form of commendation to honor these Cadet Nurse Corps members. Notably, these individuals will not be eligible for burial in Arlington National Cemetery solely based on this service. The bill aims to provide long-overdue recognition to the women who played a crucial role in supporting the healthcare needs of the United States during World War II, acknowledging their important contribution to the war effort.
