This bill recognizes and honors the service of individuals who were members of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II (specifically from July 1, 1943 to December 31, 1948) by granting them certain veteran-like status and benefits. The Secretary of Defense is required to issue an honorable discharge to these individuals within one year of the bill's enactment, which will allow them to be considered veterans for specific purposes. These purposes include eligibility for benefits under chapters 23 and 24 of title 38, such as certain veterans' benefits and provisions for headstones and markers, though they will not be entitled to all veterans' benefits. The bill specifically excludes burial rights at Arlington National Cemetery. Additionally, the Secretary of Defense may create a service medal, commendation, memorial plaque, or grave marker to further honor these Cadet Nurse Corps members. This legislation aims to provide long-overdue recognition to the women who played a critical role in supporting the healthcare system during World War II by serving in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps.
