This bill mandates that every Local Education Agency (LEA), which refers to public school districts, and public charter schools in Tennessee must administer the Presidential Fitness Test to their students to evaluate their strength, endurance, and flexibility. The Department of Education will provide schools with at least 30 days' notice before the school year begins, informing them of the criteria students must meet to earn the Presidential Fitness Award, which will align with the requirements set by the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Importantly, students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a Section 504 plan, which are legal documents outlining specific educational support for students with disabilities or health impairments, will receive reasonable accommodations during the test, and will not be required to take it if it cannot be done safely, even with accommodations. The test can be administered during physical education classes or other required physical activity periods, and a student's performance will not impact their grades. The bill also outlines reporting requirements to the state legislature if the Presidential Fitness Test is ever revoked, including data on student participation and award recipients.
