This bill mandates that every Local Education Agency (LEA), which refers to public school districts, and public charter schools in Tennessee must administer the Presidential Fitness Test to their students to evaluate their strength, endurance, and flexibility. The Department of Education will provide schools with at least 30 days' notice before the school year begins, informing them of the requirements for students to earn the Presidential Fitness Award, which must align with the standards set by the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. For students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) under federal disability law or a Section 504 plan, schools must offer reasonable accommodations on the test, but students will not be required to take it if they cannot safely participate, even with accommodations. The test can be given during physical education classes or other required physical activity periods, and a student's performance will not impact their grades. This requirement will be in effect each school year as long as the Department of Education provides the necessary written notice. If the authorization for the Presidential Fitness Test is ever revoked, the Department of Education must immediately inform all schools and submit a report to legislative committees detailing student participation and award recipients for each year the test was administered.
