This bill mandates that every Local Education Agency (LEA), which refers to public school districts, and public charter schools in Tennessee must administer the Presidential Fitness Test to their students. This test is designed to evaluate students' physical capabilities in terms of strength, endurance, and flexibility. The Department of Education will be responsible for informing these schools about the requirements for students to achieve the Presidential Fitness Award at least 30 days before the school year begins, ensuring these requirements align with those set by the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Importantly, students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a Section 504 plan, which are legal documents providing accommodations for students with disabilities under federal laws like the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Rehabilitation Act, will receive reasonable and appropriate accommodations during the test, unless it's unsafe for them to participate even with accommodations. The test can be given during physical education classes or other required physical activity periods, and a student's performance will not impact their grades. The bill also outlines reporting requirements in the event the Presidential Fitness Test authorization is revoked, requiring the Department of Education to notify schools and submit a detailed report to the legislature on student participation and award recipients.
