This bill requires the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a public authority responsible for public transportation in the New York metropolitan area, to install solar canopies on its parking facilities. A "parking facility" is defined as any parking garage, open lot, or other space owned or operated by the MTA that offers parking for public, employee, or paid use. A "solar canopy" is defined as a system designed to capture solar energy to produce usable power. Within one year of the bill's enactment, the MTA must calculate the total area of its parking facilities suitable for solar canopy development. Based on this calculation, the MTA must set a goal to use at least seventy-five percent of eligible parking facility space for solar canopies authority-wide by the year 2040. Furthermore, starting one year after the bill takes effect, any new construction or renovation project by the MTA that includes a parking facility must install solar canopies, unless the MTA has already met its seventy-five percent goal. This requirement also applies to parking facilities built by private entities using state capital funding.
