Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the public authorities law, in relation to requiring the metropolitan transportation authority to install solar canopies on its parking facilities

AI Summary

This bill mandates that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a public authority responsible for public transportation in the New York metropolitan area, install solar canopies on its parking facilities, which are defined as any parking garage, open parking lot, or other facility owned or operated by the MTA that offers parking for public, employee, or paid use. A solar canopy is defined as a system designed to capture solar radiation to produce usable energy. Within one year of the bill's effective date, the MTA must calculate the total square footage of its parking facilities suitable for solar canopy development and then set a goal to use at least seventy-five percent of eligible parking facility space authority-wide for solar canopies by the year 2040. Furthermore, starting one year after the bill takes effect, any new construction or reconstruction project by the MTA that includes a parking facility, or any parking facility built by a private entity using state capital funding, must install solar canopies, unless the MTA has already met its seventy-five percent goal.
