This bill allows qualified law enforcement officers in Tennessee to maintain their Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification after they retire or leave their agency, provided they meet certain ongoing requirements. POST certification is a standard that ensures officers have met specific training and qualification benchmarks. Under this bill, a former officer can continue to be certified annually if they have completed the initial required training, are current with their annual in-service training (which is ongoing professional development relevant to their former role), provide a letter of good standing from their previous agency each year they seek renewal, prove they are a Tennessee resident, pay any associated fees, and meet any other commission requirements. Importantly, this continued certification does not entitle them to any pay supplement, and they must notify the commission if they move out of state, at which point they will no longer be eligible for renewal. The POST commission is also empowered to create rules to implement these provisions.
