This bill allows qualified law enforcement officers in Tennessee to maintain their Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification even after retiring or leaving their agency, provided they meet certain ongoing requirements. The POST commission will issue a certificate of compliance to these former officers, who can then renew it annually if they have completed their initial recruit training, kept up with annual in-service training equivalent to their previous rank, provide a letter of good standing from their former agency each year they apply for renewal, prove they are a Tennessee resident, pay any associated fees, and meet any other commission requirements. Importantly, this continued certification does not entitle them to any pay supplement, and they must notify the commission if they move out of state, at which point they will no longer be eligible for renewal. The commission is also authorized to create rules to implement these provisions.
