This bill establishes a "heritage orchard program" in Washington State, recognizing the historical significance of apples and the alarming loss of apple varieties since 1900, with a particular focus on "lost apples" rediscovered by Washingtonians. The program, to be managed by Washington State University (WSU), will create and maintain a registry of heritage orchards, provide resources for their preservation, propagate rare and lost apple varieties for both home gardeners and commercial growers, and develop a definitive list of these valuable apple types. A "heritage orchard" is defined as either an orchard with at least five apple trees over 74 years old or an orchard containing at least one tree of a rare or lost apple variety as determined by the program.
