This bill establishes a "heritage orchard program" to conserve rare apple varieties and preserve Washington's agricultural history, recognizing that many apple varieties have become extinct since 1900, while dedicated individuals have rediscovered "lost apples" often found in old homestead orchards. Washington State University will be responsible for creating this program, which will include maintaining a registry of heritage orchards, defined as those with at least five apple trees over 74 years old or at least one tree of a rare or lost variety, and developing a list of these rare and lost apple varieties. The bill will become void if no specific funding is provided for its purposes by June 30, 2026.
