Bill Summary

This bill amends current law to provide indemnity to firearm retail dealers who participate in suicide prevention efforts offered by the State. Current law provides firearm retail dealers who sell firearms or operate a firing range in this State the opportunity to participate in training course for suicide prevention. Current law also requires firearm retail dealers distribute informational suicide prevention materials provided by the Attorney General. This bill provides that a person would not have a cause of action for loss or damages against a firearm retail dealer resulting from the dealer's participation in a course or distribution of informational materials, except for loss or damage caused by willful or wanton misconduct.

AI Summary

This bill provides legal protection, known as indemnity, to firearm retail dealers in New Jersey who participate in state-offered suicide prevention efforts. Specifically, it amends existing law to shield these dealers from lawsuits for any damages or losses that arise from their involvement in suicide prevention training courses or from distributing informational materials about suicide prevention, unless their actions were intentionally harmful or reckless, which is referred to as "willful or wanton misconduct." This means that if a dealer takes part in the training or shares the provided materials in good faith, they generally cannot be sued for negative outcomes, even if something goes wrong, as long as they didn't act with malicious intent or extreme carelessness. The bill aims to encourage firearm dealers to engage in these life-saving initiatives by reducing their potential legal liability.
