Bill Summary

This bill provides that a student enrolled in a school district who sustains a concussion must receive an evaluation by a physician or other licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions and written clearance from one of these physicians in order to return to school. In the event that the physician provides notice that the student requires restrictions or limitations, the school district 504 team must immediately implement the restrictions or limitations and notify all teachers and staff who have contact with the student of the restrictions or limitations. The school district's 504 team, in consultation with the physician who provided notice, would promptly identify the manner in which the restrictions or limitations would be provided to the student during recovery and the need for the continuation or adjustment of the restrictions or limitations, and to determine the duration of the restrictions or limitations. The bill also provides that a student enrolled in a school district who sustains a concussion is prohibited from engaging in any physical activity at school including, but not limited to, recess, physical education, or intramural sports. The student may not participate in any physical activity until he is evaluated by a physician or other licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions and he receives written clearance from the physician to participate.

AI Summary

This bill requires that any student in a public school who suffers a concussion must first be evaluated by a physician or other licensed healthcare provider specifically trained in concussion assessment and management before they can return to school. If the healthcare provider determines the student needs restrictions or limitations on their activities, the school's 504 team, which is a group responsible for ensuring students with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations, must immediately put those restrictions in place and inform all staff who interact with the student. This team will then work with the physician to figure out how to implement these restrictions during the student's recovery and decide how long they will last. Furthermore, the bill prohibits students who have sustained a concussion from participating in any physical activity at school, such as recess, physical education, or intramural sports, until they have been evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider and received written permission to resume such activities.
