Bill Summary
Under current law, no person may be employed as a deputy sheriff of any county or police officer for any city, village, or town unless that person is a citizen of the United States. This citizenship requirement does not apply to state-level law enforcement officers. This bill provides that no person may be employed as a law enforcement officer or tribal law enforcement officer in this state unless that person is a citizen of the United States. This includes traffic officers of the state traffic patrol, conservation wardens, and other state law enforcement officers.
AI Summary
This bill expands the existing requirement that certain local law enforcement officers, like deputy sheriffs and city police officers, must be U.S. citizens to also include all state-level law enforcement officers and tribal law enforcement officers, meaning anyone employed as a law enforcement officer or tribal law enforcement officer in the state must now be a citizen of the United States.
