This bill requires Local Education Agencies (LEAs), which are public school districts, to take specific actions to support dependent children of service members. For students with existing special education plans, such as a Section 504 plan or an individualized education program (IEP) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), LEAs must ensure that necessary services are in place immediately upon enrollment. Additionally, if a student in the eleventh or twelfth grade is the dependent child of a service member who is relocated due to military orders, causing the student to no longer live in the school district, the LEA must allow the student to continue attending their current high school until graduation or withdrawal. The bill also clarifies that an LEA must allow a student to enroll if they are the dependent child of a service member relocated on military orders, and the student resides within the school district at the time of enrollment, provided the parent intends to establish residency in the school's zone within one year, and will provide proof of residency within that timeframe.
