This bill requires public high schools in Tennessee to offer students enrolled in a United States government and civics course three "civic engagement field days," one for each branch of government: legislative, judicial, and executive. These field days must include structured learning activities aligned with state academic standards and involve visits to observe government in action, such as attending a city council meeting, visiting a courthouse to observe proceedings or meet a judge, or visiting the office of a mayor, county executive, or the governor. The bill also clarifies that schools are not required to reschedule visits for absent students, and schools can prohibit attendance for disciplinary reasons. If in-person visits are not feasible due to budget constraints, schools can fulfill the requirement through verified virtual tours, state-approved traveling civics programs, or visits from local public officials to the school for interactive sessions. This new requirement will apply starting with the 2026-2027 school year.
