This bill requires public high schools in Tennessee to offer students enrolled in a United States government and civics course three "civic engagement field days," with one day dedicated to observing each of the three branches of government: the legislative, judicial, and executive. These field days must include structured learning activities aligned with state academic standards and involve class visits to relevant government bodies, such as a city council or county commission for the legislative branch, a courthouse to observe proceedings or meet officials for the judicial branch, and the office of a mayor, county executive, or the governor for the executive branch. The bill also clarifies that schools are not required to reschedule visits for absent students, may prohibit attendance for disciplinary reasons, and can offer alternatives like virtual tours, traveling civics programs, or visits from local public officials if in-person visits are impractical due to budget constraints. This new requirement will apply starting with the 2026-2027 school year.
