This bill amends Tennessee law to lower the standard for when deadly force can be used to protect property. Previously, the law allowed for the use of deadly force if a person reasonably believed it was necessary to prevent or stop certain crimes like theft or damage to property, and that no other means were available or that lesser force would be too dangerous. This bill expands that justification, allowing deadly force if a person reasonably believes it's immediately necessary to prevent or stop trespass, arson, damage to property (including livestock), burglary, theft, robbery, or aggravated cruelty to animals, and that the property cannot be protected or the action stopped by any other means, or that using less than deadly force would put someone at risk of death or serious bodily injury. However, the bill clarifies that deadly force is not justified if the person against whom it is used is facing away.
