This bill amends Tennessee law to allow certain public employees to receive retirement credit for periods of disability without incurring any cost to themselves. Specifically, commissioned members of the department of safety and agents of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) who receive temporary disability benefits will be entitled to this cost-free retirement credit if they apply for it on or after July 1, 2026. Additionally, political subdivisions, which are local government entities like cities and counties, can choose to adopt this provision for their employees by passing a resolution. If a political subdivision passes such a resolution, it can allow its police officers to receive retirement credit for periods of disability at no cost to the officer, and this can be applied retroactively for those who previously paid for such credit. The bill also clarifies that a member cannot receive more than one year of creditable service for each instance of temporary disability.
