Additionally, political subdivisions, which are local government entities like cities and counties, can choose to adopt this provision for their employees by passing a resolution; if they do, they can allow their police officers to receive retirement credit for disability periods at no cost to the officer, even if the political subdivision previously charged for such credit. This provision aims to ensure that public servants who become disabled are not penalized in their retirement benefits due to their service-related injuries.
