This bill allows individuals convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) in Tennessee, who are otherwise eligible for a restricted license, to request and have a court order the use of a transdermal monitoring device as an alternative to being restricted to driving only vehicles equipped with an ignition interlock device. An ignition interlock device is a breathalyzer that prevents a car from starting if the driver's blood alcohol content is too high. A transdermal monitoring device, on the other hand, is a wearable device that continuously monitors a person's alcohol consumption. The bill clarifies that the individual will be responsible for all costs associated with the transdermal monitoring device and will not be eligible for financial assistance from the electronic monitoring indigency fund, which is a program designed to help individuals with the cost of electronic monitoring.
