This bill increases the victims assistance assessment, which is a fee collected from individuals convicted of certain crimes, from $45 to $125. This assessment is applied when someone pleads guilty, is found guilty, pleads nolo contendere (meaning they do not admit guilt but accept the conviction), or is found responsible for attempting or conspiring to commit a crime. Of the new $125 assessment, the first $15 will be kept by the court clerk to cover administrative costs, while the remaining $110 will be sent to the county where the crime occurred to fund designated victim assistance programs, which are services designed to help victims of crime.
