This bill increases the victims assistance assessment, which is a fee collected from individuals convicted of certain crimes, from $45 to $125. This assessment is imposed by clerks of various courts, including general sessions, circuit, criminal, and municipal courts, when a person pleads guilty, is found guilty, or enters a plea of nolo contendere (meaning they do not contest the charges) to a criminal offense. Of the total $125 assessment, the first $15 will be retained by the court clerk to cover processing and handling costs. The remaining $110 will be sent to the county where the offense occurred and will be exclusively used for victim assistance programs that have been designated by the county's legislative body.
